A NEW LEARNING INITIATIVE: CONTINUING EDUCATION
The Swiss historian Jakob Burckhardt once said to the philosopher Nietzsche that the twentieth century would be the age of oversimplification. This has turned out to be true: opinions are often held and decisions made with limited knowledge and little understanding. This is part of the reason for the deterioration of public life. The only effective response to this crisis is to adopt an attitude of lifelong learning.
Over the last twenty years, the Mohile Parikh Center has raised the level of the conversation in the arts and culture by offering a wide range of programs: conferences, lectures, panel discussions, workshops, and various types of presentations. It has brought renowned scholars to you from all over.
Pursuing its vision to promote learning, introspection, and a spirit of inquiry, the MPC is now launching a new initiative conceived by Dr. Prashant Parikh in the wider area of continuing education. In 2009, it will offer six short courses in a variety of fields: philosophy, physics, neuroscience, literature, painting, and film. The central focus of each course is to present the key ideas and concepts of different disciplines in an accessible manner that would interest everyone, specialist and non-specialist, with a desire to broaden and deepen their intellectual horizons.
While these are diverse domains, all the courses share the common goal of stimulating your thinking and acquainting you with an important area of inquiry. You will come away not only with an enhanced awareness of the world around you (and inside you) but also with a sharpened intellect. You will be better equipped to understand and participate in the many debates taking place at individual and public levels globally.
There are no prerequisites except a readiness to engage with the material and a questioning mind. All interested persons will be able to follow the lectures in physics and neuroscience, not to mention the other courses.
Five courses are for three full days while the neuroscience course extends for one full day. Each course will be structured differently but will provide about five hours of contact per day. The courses are open to all.
Course Timings: 9.30 am to 5.30 pm
Venue: All courses will be held at the M. C. Ghia Hall, 18/20 K. Dubash Marg (opposite Max Mueller Bhavan), Mumbai.
