The Mohile Parikh Center for the Contemporary (MPCC), in association with Asia Society India Center, will host two presentations by Harleen Singh on July 29 and 30, 2008 at 5.30pm at the Max Mueller Auditorium, Mumbai. The programs are free and open to all.
Harleen Singh is an Assistant Professor of South Asian Literature and Women’s and Gender Studies at Brandeis University (USA) and has authored a book on the Rani of Jhansi titled “The Rebel Queen,” exploring the role of women and femininity, as well as the Rani’s role as an icon in national history.

We will host a three-day workshop The Paper Airplane Project, conducted by artist, Baptist Coelho, from June 16 to 18, 2008 at the Bombay YMCA Seminar Room, Colaba, Mumbai. The project will explore drawing, painting, collage, found-objects, installation and performance with children from seven NGOs from Mumbai.
Participating NGOs: Aangan Trust, Aseema, Doorstep School, Meljol, Mobile Creches, Saalam Balak and Yuvaunstoppable.

We will host a one-day workshop Growing Up – An Art Therapy Developmental Workshop, conducted by art psychotherapist, Oihika Chakrabarti, on June 12 2008 at the Sea View Room of the National Centre for the Performing Arts in Mumbai. Children from the NGO, Amchaghar from the suburb of Bhayander, who deal with the rehabilitation and education of girl street children in Mumbai, will participate in this workshop.

The Mohile Parikh Center for the Visual Arts is collaborating with the Communications Program of Arcadia University on Visual Culture in India.The project has two broad aims: Firstly, to discover, identify and study the specific visual idiom of Indian culture in various forms. Secondly, to acquire from that experience a broader world view about visual culture, social conditions and practical insights about the people across cultures sharing the same space in the world.
The first step in this project includes a course in Visual Culture in India which involves travel to India from March 7-16, 2008. Nine students and a faculty member will be studying and traveling various aspects of visual culture in India as part of the course, including presentations at the National Centre for the Performing Arts. The Center is also exploring with Arcadia University further opportunities for collaboration, including an international conference in visual culture in India, student and faculty projects and research on specific traditions and manifestations of visual culture in India.

We will host a book event and discussion titled Follow the Hindu Moon on March 7, 2008 at 6.30pm at the Little Theatre of the National Centre for the Performing Arts in Mumbai. The author of the book, Soumya Aravind Sitaraman will converse with the noted mythologist, Devdutt Pattanaik, articulating the meaning and place of mythology, festivals, traditions, and rituals especially in a time of global culture and technology driven society.The program is free and open to all.
