This lecture and slide presentation is a homage to the painter, V.S.Gaitonde, who was considered to be India’s foremost abstractionists, though he himself negated the term, ’abstract art’ and preferred to refer to his work as ‘non-objective’. The discussion is an attempt to unravel the common assumptions that surround his artworks, analyzing the ‘process’ of his artistic journey that transcended the limits of tradition, thought and culture in its expression of human sensibilities. Art, for Gaitonde, was a process complete in itself. His paintings referred only to themselves, going beyond speech and emoting silence, exploring inward spaces and transient realities.
The program is bi-lingual, with two diverse perspectives being presented in Hindi and English respectively.
