A Hundred Years of Indian Art from the Collection of the NGMA: Some thoughts on the Pursuit of an Indian Identity

Krishen Khanna, the eminent painter, who was a member of the Progressive Artists Group, has had over forty one-man shows worldwide. He has participated in all major Biennales and Triennales and is represented in public and private collections including the Museum of Modern Art, New York, National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi (NGMA), Glenbarra Art Museum, Fukuoka, and Birla Academy, Calcutta among others.
In this talk, he intends to review the NGMA show curated by Geeta Kapur through slides and spoken annotations and to explore her views and his own on the quest for an identity by Indian artists. He also intends to discuss the whole question of modernity in the Indian context and the courses Indian Art has taken after Independence. This will include the phenomena of galleries and museums.
