With the postmodern turn in contemporary art since the early 1990s, an active experimentation with the forms of expanded sculptures, installations, new media, performance and public art took place. This opened out discursive realms of conceptualism, political inscriptions, display paradigms, subversion of authorship and public encounters.
In conjunction with the exhibition, The Other Indian Story, this program will open with the performance, Fluroscopy 2, by Anita Dube. This will be followed by a panel that will explore questions of alternative practices that was part of the zeitgeist of the time, particularly since Lakeeren Gallery had opened in 1995 in the suburb of Vile Parle, and away from the art district of Kalaghoda. The art as well as its exhibition and presentation challenged the viewer and the artists will discuss the trajectories of their practice in terms of their changing contexts, international exposure, and engagement with new modes of art making.
