To speak of the human image in art reflects the self-reflection of humans. Taking on the concept of figuration in art, the panel will discuss the processes and elements of painting the human figure – in its philosophical, social and aesthetic dimensions. Through selected artworks, each artist will discuss how they approach the human figure, their art historical antecedents, and why the presence of the human form entails an engagement with social realities. The conversation will also debate the binaries of abstraction and figuration, the concept of representation, and the idea of the human figure at the centre of a style devoted to celebrating human life and its yearnings and anxieties.
