The presentation looks at the rich and living vernacular system of urban houses in the towns of Gujarat as a manifestation of socio-cultural patterns in architecture. Built between the late eighteenth and early twentieth centuries for the Islamic community of Bohras, this house form is based on the existing regional model which was not only transformed to respond to the religious/cultural needs but was also developed to a new level of aesthetic sophistication.
