Jonathan Meese, prolific and controversial, is a German painter, sculptor, performance and installation artist based in Berlin and Hamburg. The artist views art as completely independent of human influence, with its own instinct, reality, politics and confusion. His works are filled with references to history, literature, pop culture and the art world, expressing the repressed, taboo, abject and absurd.
Meese provides spectators with an overload of shocking stimuli, which can prove overwhelming. Critics have placed him in the tendency of ‘Newactionists’; his work remains visceral, sensationalist, and thought-provoking, in the aesthetics of chaos/excess that is the representation of the pulse of his generation. To cite the Tate Modern, London, Meese’s installations and performances are some of the most provocative and dynamic to have emerged in Germany during the past decade.
