The lecture will first focus on the beginnings of contemporary Indian art at the turn of the century. Painters of the Western region such as Pestonjee Bomanji, Abalal Rehman, S.D. Satwalekar and M.V Dhurandhar start a trail, which will be explored until the pre-independence period. In this region, the hub of classic art is the Sir J.J. School of Art. The lecture will attempt to trace the interaction between teachers (both English and Maharashtrian) and students at the school and, most importantly, the emergence of notable painters.
Dnyaneshwar Nadkarni is an art critic and writer.
