Fascinated by light, movement and colour, the French painter Edgar Degas, created paintings of dancers, prostitutes, nudes, laundresses, the racetrack and Parisian cafes that give the viewer a vivid insight into his era and its everyday ethos. This documentary film explores the life and work of one of the most prolific and gifted artists of the 19th century : Degas, whose incomparable grasp of form and image was destined to reach an audience far beyond his time and place. The film celebrates his art and serves as a testament to his vision.

Manet, who was a friend of Degas, became very much the tlaneur or the man about town, who accepts the workings of chance, a witness to a world in constant flux. This visually powerful documentary presents the great French Impressionist as a daring observer of the 19th century urban scene. It examines Manet’s major paintings, using the artist’s own words and those of his contemporaries.
