Indian Classical Music: An Introduction

In this workshop, the facilitator will speak about several aspects of Indian Classical music including historical references, types of music, influences from other musical traditions, various gharanas and styles and also principles elements of music, structures of raagas and concept of tal. He will demonstrate some of the raagas and children will participate in singing some simple compositions with him.
R.K. Das is a researcher and vocalist who teaches classical music on various platforms, and has visited various countries to perform and popularize Indian classical music. He received many honours including an appointment by the ICCR to teach vocal music at the India Cultural Centre in Johannesburg. He contributes as an editorial board member to the bi-annual journal, Samakālika Sangeetham, supported by the Sangeet Natak Akademi, New Delhi. He was visiting faculty at the Department of Music, University of Mumbai (2007-2009).
