Speakers: Anjan Ray and Girish Shahane
July 22 to August 3, 1996 | 6.30 pm
Audio Visual Room, National Centre for the Performing Arts, Mumbai
The lectures will deal in some detail with particular representative artists of the period and through these analysis approach general issues like the changing status of the artist and the art object, the nature of meaning in painting, the relationship between art and utility, and the causes and implications of the shift from modernism to postmodernism.
Painting, sculpture, music, literature, architecture and cinema will each be considered in the course of the eight lectures, with the aim of gaining an overview of the meanings of the term ‘modernism’. All the lectures will be demonstrative in nature, using slides, recordings and film-clips to illustrate the arguments being presented. No specialised knowledge is presumed in the audience for the lectures, which are aimed at students and interested laymen with some basic knowledge of the artistic currents and movements of this century.
