Since the Musee d’ Orsay opened in December 1986, the public has flocked to see its collections and admire the heritage and masterpieces of the 19th century. The building itself, an abandoned railroad station, houses collections that originally came from the Louvre, the Jeu de Paume, the Musee National d’Art Moderne as well as the Musee du Luxembourg. Ranking among the world’s great museums, the Musee d’ Orsay is one of the rare museums that offers and enriches visitors with a broad panorama of various trends in painting, sculpture, architecture, decorative arts and photography during the 19th century.

The Centre Georges Pompidou, known to Parisians as The Big Escalator, opened in January 1977. It is the world’s most-visited centre for the arts. The spectacular metal and glass construction looks like a high-tech climbing frame. This documentary by the award-winning film maker Adrian Maben surveys the daily activities in this new-era cultural centre, matching the revolutionary concept of the institution with an imaginative use of video effects. Contributors to the film include Madame Georges Pompidou, Pierre Boulez, Adrian Jouffroy and Jean Tinguely.
