Kanheri Caves, Sanjay Gandhi National Park, Mumbai
The Buddhist group of caves at Kanheri is one of the most important cave groups of India. It has preserved the achievements of past human life of a period more than a millennium. It is one of the biggest cave groups with more than 120 caves in its whole complex. The caves are located within the forest of the Sanjay Gandhi National Park and offer a very picturesque setting. The visit attempts to create awareness about this ancient habitat, and its significant role and connection with the other caves of Mumbai. The experience would enhance the understanding of evolution of Buddhism and allied architecture and also the sense of literary evidence of trade and royal patronage.
Shraddha Hemant Bhatawadekar is an archaeologist and works in the field of conservation and heritage management in Mumbai. She has organized several cultural walks and heritage tours with several schools, institutions and museums in the city, including the Kalaghoda Art Festival.
