Gieve Patel will trace the 18th century Spanish painter Francisco Goya’s work from his relatively modest beginnings to his acknowledged rise in stature as the first great modernist. In doing so, Patel will touch upon important events in Spanish history that affected Goya and his work. He will also explore Goya’s powerful renderings of war and religious persecution in his times, and what insights a contemporary artist working in India today may derive from this legacy.
