1. French Classical Style of the 17th and 18th Century (Col. 30 min)
In the late 17th and 18th centuries, the nations of Europe were swept by a groundswell of culture. The Hermitage houses an unparalleled collection of French classical works from the era of France’s “Sun King”, Louis the Fourteenth, the era which ushered France into a sphere of international prominence in art, fashion, etiquette, and language.
2. The Road to Impressionism (Col. 30 min)
Major works by Claude Monet record his experiments with light and colour. Also included are numerous works by Renoir, Pissarro, and Degas. This programme takes you from the classicism of the French Academy to the shimmering works of Impressionism.
3. Modernism: Matisse, Picasso, and More 20th Century Painters (Col. 30 min)
Since the Russian revolution of 1917, the Hermitage collection has grown threefold. Many of the new acquisitions are modern works. In this programme on the 20th-century artists, you will see the brilliant, colourful works of the Fauve painters, the singular creations of Matisse and the startling innovations of the man who many believe to be the preeminent genius of 20th century painting, Pablo Picasso who ushered the art world into the realm of abstractions.
