1. Rubens, Van Dyke and the 17th Century Flemish Painters
Within the walls of the Hermitage Palaces hang some of the most beautiful paintings in the world. Today the Hermitage contains about fifteen hundred Flemish and Dutch paintings. It is a collection known throughout the world for its size and quality.
2. Rembrandt And The 17th Century Dutch Masters (Col. 30 min.)
Long before the Hermitage Palaces were constructed, Peter the Great developed a fondness for Dutch painting which soon took hold all over Russia. Peter’s love of Dutch art was synonymous with his love for the sea and it was Dutch seascapes that he first acquired. Holland was then the greatest sea power in the world-a nation of traders and seafarers. The Hermitage collection of Dutch paintings has gone far beyond Peter’s original seascapes.
3. Velazquez El Greco, Goya, And The Spanish Masters (Col. 30 min.)
In this programme, you will see the flowering of Spanish painting. The Hermitage was intended to serve as Russia’s treasure trove of the world’s artistic accomplishments. The collection of Spanish paintings is vast, enormously powerful and nearly unparalleled.
